We want to be as self contained and off-grid as possible–thus we are considering a composting toilet. As the less squeamish of us, I get to investigate. So, be warned, this may get squeamish…

The NSF requirements are a good start. And here is a comparison of toilets.

And a Manual on Humanure

SunMar might be a good idea…and says it is the only one that is NSF certified… We’ll go talk to Explotran, Inc.

But someone had problems with this one and recommends a biolet

Nature’s Head may also be worth looking into–possibly not literally, though.

RV Fulltime says: For toilet paper, use the “Marina” brand. It is commonly available in rural groceries, because it is designed to quickly disintegrate in septic tanks. Works just as well in a holding tank as that ridiculously expensive RV stuff, and is much cheaper. It won’t wad up in your holding tank and clog the drain like regular toilet paper will. When you find it, stock up with several four-packs.
