Accessibility requirements

Filed under: Accessibility — by accessahut @ 6:04 pm

This place is going to be an ADA showcase. I copied this from the Paralyzed Veterans of America:
In addition, all doors within the building must be wide enough to allow a person using a wheelchair in or out. Each unit in the building should have:
• An accessible route into and through it;
• Light switches, thermostats, and other controls located low enough for a person using a wheelchair to reach them;
• Sufficient reinforcement (studs) in the bathroom wa l l s to allow a tenant to install grab bars where needed; and
• Kitchens and bathrooms designed so that a wheelchair user can maneuver within the
space.

  1. And we’ll have all counters at wheelchair height. I’m tall enough that typical height counters give me back aches. So we’ll plan on my having to sit down to cook. Perhaps a wheeled stool, for when Deena doesn’t need her chair and for me to use regularly? Ideas? Clearly my built in desk will be my height! 🙂
